1858 (13 Nov.) envelope with enclosure from Dr Alex Gibbon in Canton to his aunt in Aberdeen, the envelope with printed "via marseilles." in red, rated "9" and with a fair strike of the framed "paid" handstamp type 10 and neat London paid transit (29.12), the reverse with Hong Kong type 7 c.d.s. (15.11) and Aberdeen arrival (30.12); there is some notation re the contents on the front, otherwise fresh and fine.


The well-written letter includes, "...Lord Elgin is expected at the end of this month, having completed satisfactorily his negotiations with the Chinese Commissioners about the tariff and now there only remains the money for the indemnity to be paid, when the Force would leave Canton ..." and, "... Mr Parkes, one of the Allies' Commissioners, told me a few days ago that he does not think the British troops will leave this until March or April next..."
