U.S.S. 'Plymouth': 1848 (17 Dec.) very long letter addressed to the Fleet Surgeon of the East India Squadron on board U.S.S. 'Plymouth' care of Wetmore & Co., Canton, "pr Overland mail via Southampton", carried privately, the reverse bears handstamps of Lemuel Goddard/London and large oval, "forwarded by/rawle, drinker & co/hong kong". The 14 page letter, written by his wife is, naturally of a domestic nature. There has been some restoration to the reverse of the cover. An interesting letter sent privately through the two forwarding agents to where the 'Plymouth' was stationed in Canton

The East India Squadron was enlarged after the First Opium War to assert American Naval power in the East Pacific from Macao and Hong Kong to the five Treaty Ports. After opening trade with China, they were keen to agree a similar treaty with Japan
