1843 (25 Aug.) entire letter from Holloway Usk & Co from "Victoria, Hong Kong" to John Buckley & Sons, Yorkshire "via Marseilles" and carried privately on the 'Petrel', rated corrected from "1/10" to "2/3" with "INDIA" in large oval, the flap with W&T Edmunds & Co. oval forwarding agent's cachet, London and Manchester (5.12) c.d.s.; there are a few folding creases.


The contents include, "... the Treaties have now been exchanged and the tariff of duties arranged. We have the pleasure to enclose you a printed copy of the tariff and port regulations. You will see that the duties are very moderate ... The Hongists will continue to exercise great power on Canton as far as the foreign trade in commercial & we doubt whether the new system will work freely or satisfactorily unless the Hong Kong Government interferes in the matters ... The new ports on the N.E. Coast are, it is expected, to be opened next month to foreign trade. We hope there will soon be a Chop out from the Emperor on the subject. In the meantime business is doing to some extent at Amoy and Chusan ... P.S. Our chief establishment in China is now at Hong Kong". Included with this lot is a contemporary cut out from the Illustrated London News with an illustration of Harbour of Hong-Kong
