1843 (20 Mar.) entire letter from an officer in Hong Kong to his brother, an officer in the 21st Madras Native Infantry and redirected. A military letter carried free of charge, the reverse with Madras Paid "6As" datestamp (23.6), a Calcutta Bearing datestamp has been crossed through and Kuhudjhee arrival datestamp (14.5); generally fresh and fine.
the interesting letter gives the following account, "Things go on quietly enough just now as far as we and our treaty are concerned, but I believe in the interim the collecting of our tribute money caused dissatisfaction and many of the old residents prophecy on outbreak before long ... Old Eliper's, the Imperial Commissioner and the person at the head of those appointed to finish and arrange the various articles of the treaty, died at Canton On the 4th, not altogether without suspicion of having been poisoned; his liberal views and conscientious determination to do us justice in all our terms particularly as to the abolition of the Hong merchants and his proclamation against the authors of the late fire at Canton had made him very unpopular to the Hongs and populace, his death was sudden, happening a few hours after his return from a feast at one of the principal Hongs ....".
