1840 (5 Dec.) wrapper docketed from Russell & Co in Canton to Rothschild & Sons in London, carried "pr HM Ship Volage", rated "2/8" (quadruple ship letter rate of 8d.) and a good strike of step-type "india letter/portsmouth", the reverse with a faint strike of London arrival c.d.s. (7.5); there is a horizontal crease and light vertical filing fold.


Very few letters were carried on naval ships, and there was little traffic from Canton at this time. The 'Volage' set sail for England on 6th December

1840年12月5日從廣州 Russell & Co 寄到倫敦 Rothschild & Sons 的包裝紙, 由皇家軍艦HMS Volage 携往, 遞送費為 "2/8" (8d 的四倍船信函遞費.) 封上蓋有梯型 "INDIA LETTER/PORTSMOUTH" 戳記, 函背蓋一較模糊的5月7日倫敦到達日戳; 有輕摺痕. 很少信函是以軍艦携送的, 其時從廣州往來的交通也十分疏落. “HMS volage” 號於 12 月 6 日啟航前往英格蘭
