1840 (3 Dec.) wrapper and part letter from Turner & Co in Macao to John Gladstone & Co, Liverpool, carried on the "pr Lousia Baillie", rated "8" and, on the reverse, a good strike of the boxed "india letter/kingsbridge" struck in red and London c.d.s. (21.4); there is a vertical filing crease and an archival tape repair along one of the folds.


The part letter includes, "... of the Chinese Government intentions, a statement which certainly gives countenance to the opinion generally entertained here that negotiations as yet, have made no progress whatsoever. In commercial matters, we have no change to report. We hear of no sales being made here except of cotton in very trilling quantities which is smuggled up to Canton..." He also notes, "... the 'Madagascar' steamer from Chusan 25th ulto has just anchored off the Roads, but by some mischance we have as yet received no letters -"
