1840 (30 Nov.) entire letter from Richie Steuart in Canton to John Gladstone & Co in Liverpool, "via Red Sea & Marseilles", rated "2/8", with "INDIA" in oval and, on the flap, London c.d.s. (8.1); there is a vertical folding crease.


The contents include, " ... It seems by no means ascertained what the Chinese have agreed to do, it seems most likely from all accounts however that commissioners have been appointed to settle all the matters in dispute in Canton. Some months will most probably elapse before the resumption of the trade, so that very probably little if any tea of the growth in 1840 can reach prior to June 1841 - even if matters are arranged with great expedition. It appears that the Admiral met with very kind and friendly treatment from the court of Pekin. We doubt when the correct accounts of this negotiation come to be known, a favorable impression will be given of the conduct of the Emperor ..."
