1862 (27 Sept.) envelope from Natal to Cape Town, marked "per Overland Mail" bearing 1861-62 6d. grey (lightly stained) tied by smudged datestamp and showing red arrival d.s. (23.10) on reverse. Very scarce. Photo

Note: The Orange Free State Ordinance No. 7 of 1856 permitted free transit of mail between Natal and Cape Colony. For letters to be sent via the overland route through the Orange Free State they were required to be endorsed accordingly or they would be sent by the often errratic ocean route.
