Lot: 161

Orange Free State
Early Letters and Handstamps
1867 (12 Nov.) entire letter headed Modderpoort addressed to Graaf-Reinet, marked "bet/1/6", rated "6" and showing red arrival datestamp (24.12). Photo

Note: Modderpoort was a settlement 135km. east of Bloemfontein in the Ladybrand District. The internal postage in the Orange Free State was 6d., but the authorities permitted private posts to operate in the areas that were not served by the postal authorities, provided these then connected with the postal system. It is probable that in this case 1/- was paid for private post and 6d. for the official internal postage.
