Auction: 21009 - World Banknotes
Lot: 221

National Bank of Egypt, remainder £5, 25 June 1898, lilac, yellow and pale green underprint, feluccas on the Nile, pyramids in background, value in each corner, reverse lilac and pale orange and green, value at left and right set in ornate guilloches, perforated SPECIMEN
(Pick 3r for type, Hanafy M2r), in PMG holder 25 NET Very Fine, cancellations lightened, annotation. Under general circumstances, the remainder banknotes are kept without signatures or serial numbers under lock and key, in case authorities or serial number ranges would change. Once remainders have no more expected future use they are usually decommissioned and subsequently destroyed. However in this case it is possible that some of these remainders were overprinted and kept for archival purposes. Judging from the facts that cancellations are lightened it is possible to believe that there was an attempt to mix them into the circulation with issued banknotes, no similar remainders recorded
