Cape of Good Hope
1868-76 Union Steam Ship Co.
Third Contract to and from Cape Town

From The United Kingdom, Officer's Letters
1868 (4 Dec.) blue envelope from Capt. Cochrane, commanding H.M.S. Peterel at Simon's Bay to his wife in Ireland, carried on the Saxon on her first return sailing under the third contract and bearing wing-margin 6d. lilac cancelled on arrival (5.1) with "devonport/h.m.s./250" duplex partially over-cancelled by Cape Town despatch datestamp, Cape accountancy marking of "1" deleted with the claim unlikely to have been allowed, Derry datestamp (7.1) on reverse; minor creases at left, otherwise fine. Rare thus with Naval Bags seldom opened in overseas countries' P.O.'s like this, and the cancellation of the stamp at Devonport being most unusual. Photo
