Second Contract to and from Cape Town, 1863-68
William Gray's "Diamond Line" during the Second Contract
1864 (June and Oct.) envelopes from Port Elizabeth to England, both carried on the Eastern Province with the first on the first sailing by the Diamond Line and the second by the third sailing by the Diamond Line, the second by the Eastern Province, both bearing De La Rue 4d. blue with very close or good to enormous margins with triangular or numeral cancellations and both showing manuscript "2" accountancy mark; and 1866 (Aug.) blue envelope carried on the first voyage of the Kaffraria from Port Elizabeth to Falmouth and on to Scotland, bearing wing-margin 4d. (creased) cancelled "2" with despatch datestamp alongside. Also 1867 (31 Oct.) envelope from Dunstable "pr Private Steamer "Asia" - Via Falmouth" to Miss Maclear at the Royal Observatory, Cape Town, the Asia's first sailing by the Cape of Good Hope Steamship Co., operating for a short time in succession to the Diamond Co., bearing 4d. vermilion with "266" duplex and showing Cape Town datestamp and "2" accountancy handstamp
