1857 (Feb.) entire from Col. Eardley Wilmot, superintendent at the Royal Gun Factory at Woolwich and addressed to William Mann, Maclear's predecessor at the Royal Observatory, Cape Town, carried on the only voyage (contract sailing) of the Harbinger and marked "Paid" though with no indication of rate charges; 1857 (2 Mar.) envelope from Rugby to Cape Town paid as a ship letter though carried by the Lindsay packet James Hartley first (only) outward journey and bearing 2d. and 6d. cancelled "?59"; and 1857
(July-Aug.) entire letter and three envelopes (all to the Royal Observatory) at Cape Town, each franked at 6d. and carried on the Armenian (only voyage), Scotland (2, second outward, and last from England) and Tynemouth (second outward), variously franked at 6d., the last showing framed "prepaid" handstamp, three showing manuscript "1" accountancy
