1856 (6 Aug.) envelope from Ipswich to a member of the 60th. Royal Rifles at Cape Town and carried on England, the first sailing under the Lindsay packet service, bearing embossed 6d. purple with margins in places and 1d. Stars pair cancelled "405" and with despatch datestamp alongside, arrival datestamp on reverse; and 1856 (15 Dec.) envelope from Dartmouth to Grahamstown carried on the W.S. Lindsay first voyage and bearing 1855-57 1/- green indistinctly cancelled, both posted at the ship letter rate of 8d. due to insufficient notice of the new service being introduced, addressed to inland locations on the eastern Frontier and with distinctive bold "8d" rate handstamp comprising 4d. sea post and 4d. inland post; both with faults though a highly unusual pair
