From Cape of Good Hope
1857 (3 Oct.) envelope from Grahamstown to London, faint "3" accountancy mark and bearing white paper 4d. blue (2, one just touched in one corner, otherwise with good to large margins) neatly cancelled, despatch and Cape Town (18.10) datestamps on reverse. Unusually paid 8d. for a sea letter posted inland prior to 1 June 1857 when the Uniform Colonial rate was 6d . This rate applied to both packet and private ship letters though with the Lindsay service having failed the letter was carried by private ship, probably the Granger
