1849-50 Packet Mail and Ship Letters Prior to the GSSS Co's First Packet Contract
1849 (30 July) entire from the Cape "per R.M.S. Brilliant" to London, showing "general post office/cape of good hope" ULS3 handstamp and London framed "packet letter" P4; 1849 (Dec.)-50 (Nov.) entire letter and envelopes (3) ex the Maclear correspondence to Cape Town, all rated "8" and showing London Ship Letter circular S29 datestamp; and 1850 (28 July) envelope with contents from Lieut West of HMS Hermes at Algoa Bay to his father Capt. Henry West at Newcastle, passed to Captain Frink of the Frederick who took it by favour to England saving the Cape postage, rated "8" and showing London "ship-letter", transcript of letter regarding moving of two regiments from Buffalo River to Cape Town in extremes of weather.
