1850-52 First Contract to and from Cape Town

1850 entire letter and 1851 envelopes (2) ex the A.K. Murray correspondence to his father in Scotland and all rated "8", the first (small imperfections) probably carried by the Rosebud to Cape Town with "general post office/Crown/cape town" ULS1, and then by the Gloriana to Falmouth, the envelopes (both with contents) both directed via Cape Town though without marks of the city and with U.K. arrival datestamps on reverse, the first probably carried by HMS Birkenhead from Simons Town after the Sir Robert Peel was late arriving, the Governor sending an urgent request for aid in a war on the eastern frontier. An interesting group; transcripts of the last two contents included, Also 1850 (June) entire from the Rev. Ridsdale, Wesleyan Missionary at the Cape to London and probably carried on the John Line en route from Madras, showing "general post office/Crown/cape town" USL1 and London "ship letter" in red
