Cape of Good Hope
1850 Mail to and from Natal
1850 (23 Apr.) entire letter from F. Morewood at "Umgini" to London, marked "per Gem" to Cape Town and then by Medea (the vessel that later brought the Koh-i-Noor diamond to England) to London, rated "2/-" (an impossible rate at this time) and showing fine oval-framed "general post office/Crown/cape town"; 1850 (15 Oct.) entire from Natal "by the first vessel that sails" to London, rated "8" and showing oval-framed "general post office/Crown/cape town" with Liverpool Ship letter handstamp on reverse, no direct proof of its origin in Natal but only one month delay in shipping from Durban can account for the time taken in the overall transit of the letter; and undated entire letter from Grahamstown to Donald Moodie at Pietermaritzberg, rated "8" and showing fine framed "prepaid" handstamp, carried by private ship from Algoa Bay to Natal. An interesting trio prior to the GSSS Co's first packet contract
