1837 (23 June) large part printed entire of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions at Boston to the American missionary Newton Adams and directed to be sent via H.E. Rutherford in Cape Town, sent to Baring Brothers in London for distribution and with their f.a.c. handstamp on reverse, sent by favour of Capt. Harrington of the Briton from Portsmouth and showing Crowned "general post office/cape of good hope" DLS4 datestamp (3.11), forwarded under payment of 11d. inland post to Port Elizabeth for the attention of David Lewis and by him passed to Capt. Rodham of the Mary to be carried to Natal, delivered at the end of November to Adams at Umhlazi and subsequently forwarded by messenger to Dr. Alexander Wilson, missionary at Umlatuzi.
