1819 (7 June) entire letter from Cape Town to London, no Cape marks and probably carried by favour to England, rated "10" and showing step-type "gravesend/ship letter" (S4) and in London with boxed "india" (In8) struck alongside, the latter required because an India Letter handstamp was not issued to Gravesend until 1820; the letter signed by Rev. Barnabas Shaw, senior Methodist Missionary in South Africa, and Rev. James Archbell, newly arrived at the Cape to join the mission which was based in Namaqualand
