Cape of Good Hope
1815-19 Cape Packet Period
1817 (18 Dec.) entire letter from Edward Edwards at Cape Town, recently arrived as Wesleyan Missionary at Namaqualand, to London, rated "3/6" and showing a good strike of the "cape of good hope/packet letter" oval datestamp (Goldblatt PL1) for 20 December, trace of arrival datestamp on reverse; although weighing between ½oz. and 1oz. it was charged 3/6d. on delivery, the single packet rate under the 1815 Act. A long letter with transcript mentions having to buy a horse to carry all his possessions as a Mr. Shaw cannot provide a waggon and oxen to transport him to the settlement; light fold across the datestamp though a clean attractive cover showing this rare handstamp.
