1776 an entire letter written by Sir Robert Liston (1742 - 1838) from Ratisbon while attending the Diet of the Holy Roman Empire as an observer for the British Government, to which he makes reference in a family letter addressed to Edinburgh, with various manuscript rate markings and bishop marks of the foreign and general branch. Liston later served as envoy extraordinary to the United States (1796 - 1800).
The Diet was a deliberative body rather than legislative, and was in permanent session at Regensburg from 1663 - 1806.
