1919 (12 June) ALS on headed paper from "The Cochrane" Hotel in St. John's, Newfoundland to "Dear Nell [Miss Nellie Lyford] and all at Wisbech", writing "Your letters and also Phil's reached me safely and I must say were very welcome. In this cold & foggy country one needs cheery letters from home to brighten one up. Still I shall not be here long, for tomorrow I hope to make a start on my big flight. This letter will accompany me in the mail with I shall carry, so I hope you receive it safely. Well bye bye, I hope to see you all soon. Yours Very Sincerely, J. Alcock.". Paper with small tear close to but clear of the signature and mounted in frame, easily removed. A superb letter written just two days before his famous flight on which it was carried. Sold by order of Miss Lyford's family with her newspaper clippings from the even together with a note of provenance from the family and an allusion to a potential romantic involvement with a member of the Air Force who sadly died.
