Great Britain
Field Marshal Herbert Kitchener
1916 (27 May), a unique group of original candid photographs (6.2 x 8.8cm) (5) showing Kitchener entertaining convalescent soldiers at Broome Park. Kitchener, aged 65 and in the last year of his life, is seen in a suit and hat with a walking stick, greeting the soldiers accompanied by a lady and a man in uniform. Each photograph with inscription in pencil by the lady in the photographs, one reading "The last photo of Lord Kitchener (?) in England". Certainly among the last photographs taken of Kitchener in England as on 5 June 1916 HMS Hampshire with Kitchener on board hit a German mine, killing him among 737 others. A touching and important group complete with the original negatives and prints made on photograph paper.
