Joseph Addison
1709 (22 April) commission document headed "Thomas Earle of Wharton, Viscount Winchendon, Baron Wharton of Wharton, Lord-Lieutenant Generall, and Generall Governour of her Majesty's Kingdom of Ireland etc." appointing "Thomas Paistow" "to be Captaine of a Company, in the Regiment of foote to be forthwith raised for her Majesty's Service, and commanded by Sir John Wittewronge". Signed "Wharton" and countersigned "J. Addison". Small piece excised from foot of document and usual signs of age.

Joseph Addison (1672-1719) was an English essayist, poet, playwright and politician, best known as co-founder of 'The Spectator' magazine. At the time of signing he was likely already acting as Secretary to Lord Wharton and MP for Cavan Borough.
