Jacobite Uprising
Mary of Modena
1695 (18 Jan.) letter signed in French to Cardinal Colloredo from St. Germain-en-Laye writing "The passion and zeal with which you are interested in all that concerns me, the expressions are so true and so pious that they are as edifying as they are obliging, they do confirm me much in the resolution that I took a long time ago to wait with submission and resignation the effects of God's will whose judgements I will always adore, either he continues to afflict me or he is pleased to comfort me...". Signed "Maria R". Bearing two black wax seals showing the coat of arms as Queen consort of England, each affixing black silk. Paper with discreet mount along fold. A wonderful letter.

When Mary II and William II & III ascended the English and Scottish thrones, James II and Mary of Modena lost their throne. With the support of Louis XIV of France, James and Mary were set up in exile in the Chateau de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, still considering themselves King and Queen.
