A Jack from H.M.S. Challenger, c. 1914.
In wool bunting, a Union Jack measuring 660mm x 1320mm with a reinforced hoist sleeve in white canvas incorporating a rope halyard, the upper end terminating in a brass Inglefield swivel-clip and the bottom end terminating in a standard brass Inglefield clip; the hoist stamped in blue ink with the inscriptions: KIRK HALL & COMPANY KIDACRE STREET LEEDS, Union and 3 BREADTHS on the obverse and CHALGR on the reverse.
Some moth damage but otherwise generally good condition.
H.M.S. Challenger (Captain Charles Beaty-Pownall), a 2nd class cruiser of 1902-20, was detailed to convoy S.S. Appam, on board which was Dobell and his staff, to West Africa and met her off Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, on 7th September 1914, proceeding to the Cameroons, where the ships arrived on 23rd September. Three days later, Challenger bombarded the port of Duala, which promptly surrendered, and she remained on station off Duala until 6th May 1915 as part of the 9th Cruiser Squadron. It seems probable that Dobell, an inveterate collector of souvenirs, was made a present of this Jack by Challenger's Captain at some point between September 1914-May 1915.
