An Arras 1917 D.C.M. awarded to Private H. Whitehard, King's Royal Rifle Corps, whose citation reads like a scene from Christopher Nolan's latest film release 1917

Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (A-232 Pte. H. Whitehard. 8/K.R.R.C.), edge bruise, good very fine

D.C.M. London Gazette 16 August 1917:

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He displayed the utmost courage in carrying important messages through heavy hostile barrage. Later, when told to rest, he went up to the front line and helped to carry in wounded under severe shelling and sniping. He set a splendid example.'

Harry Whitehard
- or Whitehead - served in France with the 8th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps from 19 May 1915. He would latterly have shared in their actions during the battles on Cherisy Ridge in May 1917; sold together with copied MIC - which notes a presently unverified 'MM' - besides research and Medal Roll extracts.
