Stephen O'Callaghan was born in Dublin and educated at St. Vincent de Paul School during 1901 before joining the Postal & Telegraph Service in India in 1906. He saw action during the Great War in Mesopotamia with the Postal Department being awarded a mention before war's end (London Gazette 27 August 1918, refers). Having possibly seen further service on the Afghanistan North West Frontier in 1919, he married in August 1921 at Simla, by that point Deputy Assistant Director of the Postal Service. He was awarded the Medal in I.A.O. 299 of 6 May 1926; sold together with Bareilly Contingent cap badge, copied verification and extracts.
