Shanghai Jubilee Medal 1983 (A. Woodward), claw re-fitted, traces of brooch mounting at 3 o'clock, very fine
Algernon Noel Woodward was born in Shanghai on Christmas Eve 1875 and entered the Shanghai Volunteer Corps as a Bugler in 1890. A member of the Light Horse in 1892, he was still in the service for the Golden Jubilee celebrations the following year (Medal). Listed as a an Assistant with Boyd & Co., the firm of Engineers and Shipbuilders of Pootung and New Dock, Woodward was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Volunteer Corps, sering with 'C' Company. Having moved onto further work with the Standard Oil Company of New York (Shanghai Branch), he served as a Private during the China operations of 1900 (Medal without clasp). Woodward was latterly initiated into the Northern Lodge of China (No.570) in 1905 and was its Director of Ceremonies and Scribe of the Zion Royal Arch Chapter by 1912. Latterly serving as an Honourary Member of 'A' (Min-ho-Loong Rifles) Company, Shanghai Volunteer Corps from 1914, Woodward appears to have left China soonafter and was married at Sydney in 1920. He lived at Macleay Street Darlinghurst, Chatswood and Neutral Bay, Warringah, having qualified as an Accountant. Woodward died at Wahringa on 20 June 1957; sold together with two group photographs which identify the recipient and full copied verification and research.
