Lalbahadur Gurung was present for the defence of Malaya in 1941. Those that were neither killed nor captured during the retreat through Malaya went into captivity in February 1942 following the surrender of Singapore, Gurung included. At the end of hostilities, the 2nd Battalion was reconstituted from the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Gurkha Rifles and in 1948 became part of the British Army; sold together with the recipient's original Pensioner Certificate, the last payment being made on 16 January 1972.1
