Arthur Dennis Hollis was born on 3 September 1913, the son of Beatrice Ada Hollis of 4 New Street, Rothwell, Northamptonshire. A butcher by trade, he attested at Coventry for the Royal Artillery on 30 September 1940 and served in North Africa and Italy during the Second World War, being demobilised on 3 July 1945.
