Walter Godfrey Gane was born on 16 November 1897 at London and served in France with the 9th Battalion, London Regiment in France from 9 May 1915. Moving out to South Africa, he worked as a Mine Secretary Accountant in Johannesburg. Having served in the National Volunteer Battalion from 1940-42, he served with the General Service Corps for the remainder of the Second World War. During this time he served in Suez from 9 October 1943-19 March 1944 and in the United Kindom and was discharged on 1 May 1946; sold with original certificate for the French award, dated 1 July 1956, besides copied MIC and South African service record.
