John T. Hawkins initially served with the 2nd Light Tank Company, attached Royal Tank Corps in India. He was later promoted to Lance-Corporal and transferred to the 1st Light Tank Company in India, before witnessing service in North Africa with the 7th Royal Tank Regiment and being captured on 20 June 1942 in the final exhaustive stages of the Battle of Gazala; sold with copied research, a West Riding Constabulary cap badge, an unnamed bronze Bell Medal presented by the Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs, and two fabric sporting shield patches for hockey and cricket.
