[D.C.M.] London Gazette 20 October 1916:
'When all the lines were cut, he acted as runner to Brigade Headquarters. On another occasion a shell burst so near him, when he was repairing a line, that he was picked up in the crater, but he refused to go back till ordered to do so, having spent twelve hours trying to maintain communications.'
William Pateman was born in Shoreditch, London and enlisted on 13 May 1907. He served in France with 28th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery from 19 August 1914. Having been awarded his D.C.M., he was wounded on 25 September 1917 having been transferred to the Royal Engineers (Signals Section); sold together with copied MIC and service record.
