Great Britain: London Joint Stock Bank, £50 shares, a certificate, acknowledging transfer of shares, 185[9], £10 paid, from William Gladstone at the General Post Office, London, to Jessy Sweetland, brown and black. Gladstone at this time Chancellor of the Exchequer, becoming Prime Minister for the first time in 1868. The bank was established in 1836 and amalgamated with the London City and Midland Bank in 1918. It would appear that certificates acknowledging transfers were of similar status to actual share certificates, each being signed by directors and secretary. VF but a little grubby.
