Hankow
British Consular Post
Opening of the British Post Office
1876 (18 Mar.) commercial wrapper to Hong Kong "per English Mail Str." bearing Hong Kong 1863-71 8c. orange tied by a superb strike of the large "62B" type B in blue and, on the reverse, fine strikes of Hankow type B in blue and Hong Kong arrival (28.3). A superb and very early cover from the opening of the British Post Office in Hankow and before the arrival of the "D.29" obliterator. A great rarity of Hankow postal history and of the Hong Kong Treaty Ports. Photo
Webb records only two other covers used before the introduction of the "D.27" cancellation. These all bear the same large "62B" and it is concluded that this cancellation was supplied to Hankow before being replaced by the more familiar numeral
