Imperial Airways & PAA Trans-Atlantic Services to USA
Pan American Airways began its North Atlantic service in June 1939, from New York via Shediac, Botwood and Foynes to Southampton. After the outbreak of war on 1st September 1939, it changed its terminals to Foynes and Lisbon.
1939 (16 Dec.) envelope from Singapore to Barbados, marked "Transatlantic Air Mail via Imperial Airways", franked at $1.30 and cancelled by "field post office/s.p. 501" c.d.s. and showing framed "passed by/naval/censor" in blue. Scarce, about ten covers recorded at this rate. Photo
Note: This cover went by Imperial Airways to Marseilles then rail to Lisbon, to connect with PAA FAM-18 Trans-Atlantic Clipper flight to New York.
