The Wartime Period
Imperial Airways & PAA Trans-Atlantic Services to USA
Pan American Airways began its North Atlantic service in June 1939, from New York via Shediac, Botwood and Foynes to Southampton. After the outbreak of war on 1st September 1939, it changed its terminals to Foynes and Lisbon.
1939 (5 Aug.) envelope registered from Telok Anson (Perak) to Milwaukee, marked "By North American Air Service", franked at $2.05, showing manuscript "AV2" and, on reverse, Penang (5.8), New York (17.8) and arrival datestamps. The earliest Trans-Atlantic airmail cover from Malaya and the only one known at this rate. Photo
Note: This cover was flown before the Post Office announced its acceptance of mails by PAA's Trans-Atlantic service to USA. It was charged the same rate as that flown by Trans-Pacific service from Hong Kong, $1.90. The rate was set at $1.30 per half ounce in early September 1939.
