1857 (4 Sept.) entire letter from Adelaide to Norfolk, marked "Per Emeu Overland", bearing "registered" 1.- with trace of roulettes at foot and Woodblock 6d. (cut-into), both tied by Melbourne Barred Numeral "1", showing handstruck "d6" and red London Registered d.s. (7.12) with, on reverse, Melbourne and arrival datestamps. The contents of the letter explain why the stamps are cancelled in Melbourne:- "misunderstanding between the governments of S. Australia and Victoria, and the latter had refused to send our mails by the Overland Route so i am compelled to send this under cover to a friend in Melbourne to post with directions to Register in his own name.".
