Note:: This cover was carried by E & A "Simla" from Melbourne to Suez, the overland to Alexandria. On arrival there, on 12 July, there were no E & A vessels, nor was there any P & O vessel to take UK mail. However, the British Consul requisitioned the screw steamer "Scamander" to take the "via Marseilles" mail to Malta. There, the E & A "Cambria" which had arrived from Marseilles took the overland mail back there and so the letter arrived in London on 27 July, 11 days late.
