Exchequer Warrant
1599 (September) an exchequer warrant for Bartholmewe Thwaites, "one of the Messangers of her majesties chamber ... being imployed in ryding inhaste night and day to divvers and sundrie places ... by ye commandment of the right honorable the Earle of Nottingham, Lord Generall of her majesties Armie, for the space of sixtene days ...". the document is signed by Thomas Egerton, Lord Buckhurst, Earl of Nottingham, Baron Hunsdon, Roger North and John Fortescue. Footnote indicates payment signed off by Vin Skynner. A fine document in a good state of repair. Photo

Thomas Egerton, 1st Viscount Brackley (1540 – 1617), known as 1st Baron Ellesmere from 1603 to 1616, was an English nobleman, judge and statesman from the Egerton family who served as Lord Keeper and Lord Chancellor for twenty-one years.



Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset (1536 – 1608) was an English statesman, poet, and dramatist. He was the son of Richard Sackville, a cousin to Anne Boleyn. He was a Member of Parliament and Lord High Treasurer.



George Carey, 2nd Baron Hunsdon (1547 – 1603) was the eldest son of Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon and Anne Morgan. His father was first cousin to Elizabeth I of England. In 1560, at the age of 13, George matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1566 he accompanied the Earl of Bedford on an official mission to Scotland, to attend the baptism of the future King James VI.



Roger North, 2nd Baron North (1530 – 1600) was an English peer and politician at the court of Elizabeth I. He was appointed Treasurer of the Household in 1596 after the death of Sir Francis Knollys. North was a personal friend of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, the Queen's favourite. He was present at the latter's secret marriage to the Countess of Essex in 1578, and served at his expedition to the Netherlands in 1585–1587. Leicester wanted to make Lord North governor of Brill in 1586, which desire was, however, declined by Elizabeth.



Sir John Fortescue (ca. 1531 – 1607) of Salden Manor, near Mursley, Buckinghamshire, was the seventh Chancellor of the Exchequer of England, serving from 1589 until 1603.
