Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham
1598 (c.) warrant on laid paper, apparently addressed to the exchequer for "for their labor and travaile and expenses in their said office"; these costs for James Charles, Surveyor General of Navy for victualling her Majesty's navy, the total amounting to £24 10s. 8d and is signed with the bold signature "Notingham". the top fragment of the document is missing and has been repaired and there is some non-contemporary notation at the foot. Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham, 2nd Baron Howard of Effingham (1536 – 1624), known as Howard of Effingham, was an English statesman and Lord High Admiral under Elizabeth I and James I. He was commander of the English forces during the battles against the Spanish Armada and was chiefly responsible, after Francis Drake, for the victory that saved England from invasion by the Spanish Empire.
