Exchequer Warrant
1600 (1 February) warrant for payment to John Goodman, "one of the Messengers of her Majesties Chamber for the attending upon me the Lord Treasorer of England ..." and signed "T. Buckhurst" at Sackville House. The warrant addressed to Vincent Skinner of her Majesties Receipt at Westminster. There is a footnote below this passing the payment for £10 6s. 8d. and signed "Vin Skinner" and a subsequent endorsement in another hand. Fine. Photo

Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset (1536 – 1608) was an English statesman, poet, and dramatist. He was the son of Richard Sackville, a cousin to Anne Boleyn. He was a Member of Parliament and Lord High Treasurer. He was born on the family estate in Buckhurst. In 1599 he succeeded William Cecil, Lord Burghley, as Lord Treasurer, a position he kept until his death.


Sir Vincent Skinner (1543 – 1616) was an English politician, who sat in Parliament for numerous constituencies. He held a number of public offices, including Constable of Bolingbroke Castle and Lincoln Castle in 1583. He was secretary to William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley from c1575 to 1593, after which was appointed to the Exchequer as an auditor of the receipt.
