Royal Naval Reserve L.S. & G.C., G.VI.R., 1st issue (19668X. W. Rose, Smn., R.N.R.), extremely fine

William Rose was born in Glasgow in June 1911 and enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve as a Seaman in November 1937, his service record noting a 'Thistle and Scotland for Ever' tattoo on his right forearm.

Mobilised on the outbreak of hostilities, Rose joined the destroyer H.M.S. Wanderer in October 1939 and remained similarly employed until September 1940. In that period Wanderer was assigned to convoy duties in the Western Approaches but was transferred to the Home Fleet for the evacuation of Allied troops from Norway in April-May 1940: she picked up 150 troops but grounded off Andalsnes and had to be towed free by her consort Sikh. She was quickly back in action, however, taking part in Operation "Cycle" - the evacuation of Allied troops from Le Havre - on 6-7 June 1940. In late August 1940, shortly before Rose's departure to a new appointment ashore, Wanderer picked up survivors from the torpedoed Jamaica Pioneer and delivered them to Belfast.

Rose subsequently served in the ex-torpedo recovery vessel Elfin, from October 1940 to October 1942, in which period she acted as depot ship to the 6th Submarine Flotilla at Blyth.

He was released from service in late 1946 and received his L.S. & G.C. Medal in July 1947; sold with copied service record.
