Joseph McPhillips was born in Liverpool, Lancashire in December 1878 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in December 1896. Having in the interim served as a Ship's Corporal, he was promoted to Petty Officer 1st Class in the summer of 1907. From December 1912 to February 1916, he served in the Grand Fleet repair ship Cyclops. He came ashore in March 1919, having enrolled in the Royal Fleet Reserve in December 1918; sold with copied service record.
