1914-15 Star (2095 Pte. H. Heathman, R.N. Devon Yeo.); British War and Victory Medals (2095 Sjt. H. Heathman, R.N. Devon Yeo.), generally very fine (3)
Harry Heathman landed at Suvla, Gallipoli on 9 October 1915, where his unit - the 1/1st Royal North Devonshire Yeomanry - was initially attached to 11th (Northern) Division; in November it was attached to the 2nd Mounted Division and the 53rd (Welsh Division) in the firing line.
Evacuated from the peninsula to Egypt at the end of December 1915, 1/1st Royal North Devonshire Yeomanry served in defence of the Suez Canal. In January 1917, the unit was amalgamated with the 1/1st Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry to form the 16th (Royal 1st Devon and Royal North Devon Yeomanry) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, and it was in this latter capacity that Heathman and his comrades shared in the trials and tribulations of the Palestine operations 1917-18. The unit was subsequently embarked for France in May 1918.
