John Knox appears to have arrived in France in May 1915, as a member of 'B' Squadron, 1/1st Queen's Own Royal Glasgow Yeomanry. Having in the interim also served in the Highland Light Infantry, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in early 1917. He was advanced to Lieutenant in November 1919 (London Gazette 5 March 1920, refers).
