John Oswald Farquhar was born at Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire on 2 February 1897, the son of Mr. R. W. and Mrs. B. H. Farquhar of 'Mossyde'.
Educated at Fettes College, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the 2/1st Queen's Own Royal Glasgow Yeomanry in February 1915 and, having transferred to the 2/1st Essex Yeomanry, was advanced to Lieutenant in July 1917.
Embarked for France in late November, he was attached to the 10th (Service) Battalion, Essex Regiment and was killed in action during the German Spring Offensive on 23 March 1918, when participating in a counter-attack led by his C.O., Temporary Major A. S. Tween, D.S.O.: in just seven days the 10th Battalion had 19 officers killed.
Farquhar, who was 21, has no known grave and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial; sold with copied research, including much official correspondence taken from T.N.A. WO 374 series.
