(x) Pair: Chief Petty Officer H. Stone, Royal Fleet Reserve, late Royal Navy, who died on active service in April 1917

Harry Stone was born at Andover, Hampshire on 27 July 1867 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in October 1882. The recipient of steady promotion, he attained Petty Officer status in September 1896 and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in January 1904.

Having then been pensioned ashore in July 1910 - when he enrolled in the Royal Fleet Reserve - he was recalled on the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914 and joined the armed merchant cruiser Armadale Castle. He was likewise employed at the time of his death on 27 April 1917, having in the interim witnessed active service in the German South-West African campaign of 1914. He left a widow, resident at Victoria Road in Peckham, London and was buried in Birkenhead (Flaybrick Hill) Cemetery, Cheshire; sold with copied service record.
